Components have continued to get smaller and smaller over the last 40 years. Mostly driven by the need to fit more in a tighter package, we are seeing discrete components the size of course ground pepper...(i.e. 0202 chip resistors) and components are no longer big bulky vacuum tubes or 10 watt wire wound resistors.... we are now printing components and imbedding them into PCB's. In fact the PCB it self is a component of high speed digital boards and microwave boards.

My definition of a component is any discrete or multifunctional building block in an electronic or electrical circuit.

A printed circuit assembly may contain resistors, capacitors, connectors, diodes, transistors, photo-diodes, Light emitting diodes, op amps, microprocessors, counters, memory arrays, delay lines, shift registers, Programmable Array Logic PAL, Gate arrays, variable resistors or potentiometers, variable capacitors, batteries, sockets, plugs...(these and many many more...)

What I want to do is expose the new student to some of the building blocks of printed circuit design....
